چکیده

This paper describes a new friction model, called the “brush model“, suitable for haptic rendering in virtual environments. A novel two-layer multiasperity surface contact model is presented that provides real-time rendering of friction forces at haptic refresh rates. This new friction model has several advantages; of particular importance is the accuracy with which it handles static friction and the transition to sliding motion. This paper focuses on one such feature of static friction, namely the undesirable motion drift artefact; results are presented which show that our model behaves correctly. Issues relating to implementation of the friction model in virtual environments are also discussed.

Nano-Scale Effect in Adhesive Friction of Sliding Rough Surfaces

Study of contact and friction at multiple length scales is necessary for the effective design and analysis of surfaces in sliding microand nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). As loading forces decrease in such applications, the size of the asperity contacts tends to decrease into the nano scale regime. Also with the increase in surface area to volume ratio in such systems, the surface f...

Approximation of the Integrals of the Gaussian Distribution of Asperity Heights in the Greenwood-Tripp Contact Model of Two Rough Surfaces Revisited

Modelling of the contact between moving rough surfaces allows a better understanding of friction and wear mechanisms, which can be used in engineering solutions. This issue has been examined using a number of approaches. The statistical type of a contact model is still the most popularmodel used in rough surfaces contact. This statement does not mean that it is the best solution of contact rough...

Sliding Friction Contact Stiffness Model of Involute Arc Cylindrical Gear Based on Fractal Theory

Gear’s normal contact stiffness played an important role in the mechanical equipment. In this paper, the M-B fractal model is modified and the contact surface coefficient is put forward to set up the fractal model, considering the influence of friction, which could be used to calculate accurately the involute arc cylindrical gears’ normal contact stiffness based on the fractal theory and Hertz ...

Effect of surface roughness on steel-steel dry friction coefficient

The influence of surface roughness magnitude and direction on dry static friction coefficient between two similar steel samples has been studied through an experiment. A testing apparatus has been designed and fabricated to measure the friction coefficient for a few forms of surface asperity. According to the results of the experiments, dry friction coefficient is affected by both magnitude and...
